Personality
[Yes-man] [Nervous] [Sarcastic (secretly)]
Bertie is a wreck of an adult. Constantly berated by her family, superiors at work, co-workers, her cat, the hot dog vendor down the street etc. for her incompetence (accurate or not), she's sort of gotten used to the idea of her self-worth not being worth very much. She's surrounded by a lot of strong personalities, so her first instinct is to always give in and let other people have their way since they're probably right anyway. She's very much a "yes-man" in every sense of the term. She's always holding a lot back, and naturally all that repression has led her to have a very colourful internal monologue. Sometimes when she's not paying attention it slips out, and the people around her will either berate her for her sarcastic comments or stare in surprise and confusion. Jury's still out on which reaction she prefers.
Other than that she's usually nervous and worried about not getting in trouble. Not about people-pleasing, but more about people-appeasing so that her butt's not in the fire. She did some pretty wild things during her teen years so the uh fear of god, so to speak, is still with her.
Once upon a time she had like, journalistic integrity, or something and a curiosity and determination that drove her to chase down the loosest threads of a story. That's since been eroded by her incompetence (?) as told by her superiors so these days she's more worried about getting through a day with the least amount of trouble possible.
Background:
tl;dr: Refugees during the war, resettled in Argent with her fam. Dad injured and hospitalized, mom taking care of him, brother missing. Works for a sham of a media outlet. Dying inside.
Bertie's South Korean father and Hong Kong mother immigrated to New York from Hong Kong during the big immigration boom in the late 90's/early 2000's. Fascinated by the beautiful foreign land, they named their first-born daughter after the majestic Statue of Liberty. This would prove to be a mistake and led to not only numerous schoolyard fights over name-calling, but also for their daughter to henceforth go by "Bertie". They learned from their mistakes and named their next child Phillip.
Bertie would grow up to be a trouble-maker and be kicked out of various schools for trouble-making and accusing the system of conspiracies etc. giving her parents endless grief. For the most part, her childhood/teenage years were fairly uneventful.
This all changed when
The pair somehow managed over time to reunite with her mother in San Francisco (or Argent as the case was), but Phillip was nowhere to be found. They looked ceaselessly for months, but couldn't find even a scrap of information with all the wartime confusion and misinformation.
In the meanwhile, Bertie's father attempted to find work for a while doing menial labour, but the injuries he sustained from the attack were far worse than they assumed. As time went on, they worsened to the point that he had to be hospitalized and it became clear that he couldn't manage without constant supervision and assistance for his daily activities. Bertie's mother stayed by his side from then on to see to this duty.
Bertie quit school and started working in the mailroom of a major news company in hopes of finding information about her brother and to pay for the hospital fees. She managed to work her way up to a permanent member of the writing/research staff, but with the installment of Commander Jay as supreme chief of the city, all major media sources were under heavy scrutiny and on a tight leash. Her duties as an investigative journalist began dwindling to the point where she became nothing more than a glorified office lady. Occasionally they let her publish an exciting fluff piece on what colour the sky was that given day.
All in all, her current circumstances-of having to not only provide for her family, but to pay for her father's increasing hospital fees, of having no idea of and no means of finding out where her brother is, and the lack of fulfilling work at her company, have led Bertie to develop a general apathy towards life.
On top of that, she's now thirty.
Her parents are now on an endless train of scolding and nagging her for not being married and keep trying to set her up with government employees and doctors. Not to mention all her co-workers are getting married and that's all they talk about at the office. (Bertie, for her part, can't understand how they can worry about something like this when her brother is missing and they're unsure of whether the very air they breathe is safe).
Bringing us up to the now, Bertie is currently enduring a mid-life crisis.
